As foot traffic increases over the summer and more people are discovering the Doraville Art Center, it's the perfect opportunity to answer common questions and share the general etiquette of our communal art & craft space

EVERYONE is an artist, and everyone belongs here - that includes you! The words "art" and "artist" can be off-putting to newcomers, who might think a specific level of proficiency is required to use them. The truth is that art is an ALL-INCLUSIVE activity, not a gated kingdom! Play, learn, make a mess - it's all art.
Do we have what you need for your project? Explore and find out! Materials are listed on the cabinet doors and labeled on individual storage pieces, and areas are color-coded to make this easy!

Green Section - Fabric and fiber arts
Blue Section- General craft
Yellow Section - Advanced craft
Red Section - Paint & Ink
Purple Section - Material dye (materials for use during classes only)
Orange Section - Resin and acrylic (materials for use during classes only)
White Section - Tech arts (materials for use during classes only)
Yes, you can use that! Our space is full of bins, drawers, cabinets and crannies with a wider variety of art supplies than we could cover in a single post, and all of it exists to be explored and utilized. Unless there's a Post-It indicating an item belongs to a specific person, you're in the clear to use it!
Put it back where you found it It takes a lot of work to keep our space organized. If you picked out some magazines for collage or graphite pencils for sketching, return them exactly where you found them before leaving.
Open Studio vs. Classes "Open studio" is a simple way to say: "We're open during these hours, but there's no specific class or teacher." These blocks are great for newcomers or anyone looking to experiment - they cost only $5 per person and are completely self-directed. Come in, pay at the register, and start exploring + creating!

A class, on the other hand, will cost anywhere from $25-$45, with a trained instructor guiding you through the process from start to finish. Classes end with completed works of art students can take home and display, give away, or even sell.
When in doubt, ask a Docent! If you still have questions after looking through the cabinets and checking out the labels, our Docents and DART staff are more than happy to point you in a direction or clarify any processes.
Scraps happen! Art & craft are messy endeavors, but we've got places for recyclables, trash, and scrap fabric for disposal, so tables aren't left dirty. When disposing of beverages or liquids, please empty the containers down the sink located behind the tie-dye curtain. When disposing of sharps or broken glass, utilize the bin labeled Broken Glass located behind the tie-dye curtain - this keeps everyone safe!
We are a community! This is YOUR community art center, and we want you to feel as comfortable walking into DART as you would walking into your own craft room. Come visit with us, make friends, nurture new skills - and leave it like you found it, so we're all taking good care of each other.
