I have always been drawn to the idea that beauty hides in plain sight — that the objects we pass every day carry within them an unrealized potential for art. With The Beautiful Game Blooms, I found that potential in the soccer ball.
Fútbol is a common language of our community. It is played in parking lots and parks, spoken across generations and cultures, and understood without a single word. When I looked closely at the ball itself — its repeating hexagons, its precise geometry — I saw something else entirely: the architecture of a flower. From that recognition, this piece was born.
I deconstructed the balls and rebuilt them as blooms- orange, purple, red, blue, green — and mounting them against a gestural green canvas that suggests both a playing field and a garden. The black centers ground each flower, holding a memory of the original form even as the whole is transformed into something new.
This work is about transformation. It is about the way a common object can become a work of art, the way sport and creativity are not separate pursuits but two expressions of the same human joy. Every bloom in this piece carries the energy of a game played, a goal scored, a neighborhood gathered.
I made this for the people who recognize the ball — and for the moment they see it differently.
